Abington – Boil Water Advisory Lifted / Nitrite Investigation Continues

Carolina Water Service of North Carolina has two important updates for Abington customers:

First, it was reported to CWSNC late last Friday that elevated nitrite levels were detected in samples analyzed by a state-certified independent lab for two wells serving the community. Those wells were taken offline. As part of required safety protocol, the community and media were notified of the results of the testing along with the possible impacts of elevated nitrite. CWSNC retested the wells earlier this week and those test results indicated no presence of nitrite. Out of an abundance of caution, CWSNC is conducting additional testing through two independent state-certified laboratories to verify that nitrite levels for all wells within the Abington community meet federal and state drinking water standards. We will keep customers informed as these additional test results are received and verified.

In a second and unrelated incident, a water main break occurred on Tuesday, July 14, that required a temporary boil water advisory while repairs were made and the water system was tested. The required testing has been completed and the boil water advisory has now been lifted.

While the boil water advisory has been lifted, precautionary measures related to the ongoing nitrite investigation remain in effect until all testing has been completed, reviewed and accepted by the state. Bottled water will continue to be available for customers at the Wastewater Treatment Facility for pickup at your convenience.

We understand these events have caused concern, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to address these issues. Protecting public health and providing safe, reliable drinking water remain our highest priorities.
