Dear Ashley Hills North Customer:
Carolina Water Service of North Carolina (CWSNC) is sharing an update on our work to address elevated uranium levels in Well 3 serving the Ashley Hills community. As previously notified, and in accordance with North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) requirements, Ashley Hills North customers were informed of the exceedance. To ensure customer safety, Well 3 was taken out of service immediately after the annual test results were received.
Well 3 Rehabilitation
Our team has finished installing new filtration equipment at Well 3. Recent testing confirms the water meets all state and federal safety standards, and we can resume using this well as a water source. The well is currently undergoing final adjustments and will be back in service as soon as possible.
Water Quality
Our additional two wells have remained fully compliant and have provided sufficient capacity to supply safe drinking water to the community. We will continue to provide regular quarterly testing updates to our customers as required by regulations.
Additional Information
It is important to note that Uranium levels are evaluated using the EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), which is based on a running annual average. Because this average reflects multiple sampling periods, even with improved test results, CWSNC may still be required to notify customers until the running average returns below the MCL. Each notification will clearly outline the steps taken to protect water quality and the actions to return the system to full compliance.
Sincerely,
Carolina Water Service of North Carolina
February 12, 2026
On February 12, 2026, CWSNC notified Ashley Hills North customers of an exceedance in uranium, as required by NCDEQ. Well 3, the affected well, was taken offline immediately upon receiving the annual test results.
The other two wells remain fully compliant, have adequate capacity, and continue supplying safe drinking water to the community. Water remains safe to use normally, including for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
Installation of new filtration equipment is ongoing. CWSNC will retest Well 3 after filtration improvements and will only return it to service once the well meets all state and federal standards. CWSNC will communicate directly with customers when work is completed and Well 3 will be returned to service.
Note: Uranium is a naturally occurring element, commonly found in local rock and soil. Groundwater in areas like Ashley Hills North can naturally experience fluctuations in uranium levels due to local geology and seasonal variation.
